Do you want to have hot water but can’t seem to make it run through your faucets? Although it can get frustrating, it’s not as complicated as it seems.
As long as your HVAC works, you’re likely to get hot water on demand. In some cases, your plumbing system doesn’t work the way you expect it to. If you aren’t getting hot water, what should you do about it?
Here are a few possible causes and solutions to try if there’s no hot water running through your faucets.
Water Tank Leak
One of the common reasons for losing hot water in your system is because of a leaking tank. So if it’s leaking, there won’t be enough water for it to heat.
Empty water tanks pose a risk and can result in high energy waste. If you suspect this is the cause, inspect the water tank thoroughly. Check every valve, pipe, and corner to make sure you don’t overlook anything.
Gas Line Leak
Any issue with your water system’s gas supply could put you and your home in extreme danger. So, be on the lookout for a rotten-egg-mixed-with-gas-like smell spreading in your home.
To deal with a gas leak, remember the following:
- Keep a safe distance from the source
- Close all gas valves
- Call your utility company ASAP
- Open your windows and doors
- Do not touch any electrical appliances
- Take phone calls outside
Failure With Gas Valve
If you own a gas hot water heater, consider checking the gas inlet valve, gas supply tube, and gas valve for any leaks. It also helps to check if it’s secure or if the gas is open in the first place.
Inspect your heater’s pilot light to confirm if the gas valve works. Keep relighting it if necessary and note that it should keep burning.
You might have to consider going through new water heaters if it doesn’t work.
Closed Pilot Light
Gas water heaters that only produce cold water may mean the pilot light is out. If so, your water heater system stays off and fails to keep water hot in the tanks.
Check on your pilot light to see if it’s still open. To do so, you can try these steps:
Turn off the regulator for a few minutes, then move it to pilot mode. If it self-ignites, hold down the self-ignition knob for a few seconds. Change the regulator settings to “on.” You can also hold a lighter over the gas supply tube to relight it.
Electrical Malfunction
If you have hot water issues with an electrical heater, it implies the system is faulty. It could be due to an underlying electrical problem, like loose connections or a tripped circuit breaker.
In that case, check your water system’s wiring, connections, and breaker for anything broken. If it’s clear, you might only need to restart the system.
Thermostat Issue
If your shower gets cold in the middle of use, it could be due to the thermostat. Make sure it’s set to the right temperature.
Otherwise, if the settings are correct but there’s no hot water, try restarting it. If it still doesn’t work, you should repair or replace it.
